Signs to watch for in an aging parent (and what they actually mean)

It's hard to know which changes to take seriously when you don't see your parent every day. This isn't a medical guide — it's a list of patterns the families we work with have learned to notice.
Changes in routine
A skipped breakfast on Tuesday is nothing. Three weeks of skipped breakfasts is a pattern. Look for shifts in habits more than single events.
Word-finding pauses
Occasional 'what's the word' is normal at every age. Frequent searching mid-sentence, especially with people's names, is worth mentioning to their doctor.
Less interest in the things they loved
When the garden goes untended or the crossword stops getting done, ask gently. Sometimes it's grief, sometimes it's vision, sometimes it's mood — but it's always worth a conversation.
